I’m Josue Hernandez. I turn ideas into code.

I’ve always liked figuring out how things work — whether it’s molecules, circuits, or a Linux server that won’t boot. I got into chemistry because I liked solving problems at the smallest scale, but over time I started to realize how much I enjoyed building things I could actually use. That’s what pulled me toward code.

In grad school, I worked with nanocrystals during the day and spent nights messing with microcontrollers, writing Python scripts, or spinning up servers just to see what I could get working. I ended up building tools for the lab, then small web apps, and eventually full-stack projects that solved real problems I was running into.

These days, I’m focused on building useful stuff — tools that make life easier for other people, whether that’s automating a workflow, managing a rental property, or helping someone understand a tough concept in chemistry. My path into software wasn’t traditional, but it’s given me a practical approach: I’m not just writing code to learn — I’m building things that are useful.

Full stack developer, and chemist.

I’m a full-stack Python developer with a strong background in Linux server administration, automation, and deploying secure web applications. I’ve built and hosted Django apps on AWS EC2 with Nginx, PostgreSQL, and Ubuntu—handling everything from backend logic to frontend styling with TailwindCSS. I also run my own Proxmox cluster at home for virtualization and container-based services, and I enjoy figuring out how to make systems fast, efficient, and reliable.

Before getting into software, I worked in the lab as an optical scientist, focusing on spectroscopy, thin films, and perovskite nanocrystals. I built precision optical setups from scratch, automated measurements with Python, and handled everything from calibration to data analysis. Whether it’s instrumentation or infrastructure, I like building things that solve real problems—and actually work.

From Concept to Code

Here are a few projects I’ve put real time into. These are open-source and on my github. So take a look — and if you’ve got ideas, I’m always open.

  • Sheldon Group

Designed and deployed a custom research group website from scratch using Django and TailwindCSS, hosted on an EC2 instance for full control over infrastructure.

  • Sciplot

A simple plotting website where users can upload text files for data analysis purposes. Users can download their figures. Used for automating data analysis in research group.
